Making easy to sell
products at multiple
marketplaces

VTEX 01
Challenge

VTEX is an Enterprise Digital Commerce Platform from Brazil. It became an NYSE-listed company in 2021.

Every VTEX account is designed to be both a seller and a marketplace, which has resulted in rapid growth in marketplace sales in the 2010s.

The marketplace product needed a redesign to provide a better experience. We focused on usability offering more control, visibility and autonomy for its users.

Goals

01. Improve operational visibility and health status overview

02. Increase autonomy of the Operators

03. Reduce the time required to execute repetitive tasks

04. Provide a clearer approach for handling system errors

Research

We knew we had to better understand the use cases, personas, jobs to be done, and challenges that our users had. So we went to talk to them. We visited their operation, listened to feedback, and could see them using our platform.

Kick off

We began by using a UX Canvas to clarify the problem, target audience, and success metrics for the project. We also created Proto-Personas to be validated in Discovery Interviews.

Discovery interviews

Matheus, the Product Manager, and I visited 5 clients in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires. We gained valuable insights into their business and usability needs and Use Cases.

Personas overview

After the interviews, we defined our personas: Marketplace Manager, responsible for the whole operation; Vertical/Brand Manager, responsible for a marketplace vertical or brand; Operator, responsible for managing SKUs; Engineer, responsible for making sure the system is healthy.

Benchmark

We analyzed our competitors and similar products to understand their features, IA, interactions, and user flows. This helped us identify opportunities and how our current solution compares to them.
Strategy

We gained valuable insights from the user interviews, which informed our strategy. Based on the information gathered, we identified four key opportunities to pursue:

01. Simplify the experience by gathering all products in one place

02. Create a Dashboard to provide visibility and control over statuses

03. Create Logs and Errors to provide more autonomy and control

04. Enable bulk actions for repetitive tasks

Our platform should inform Managers how their Channels are performing and help Operators and Engineers streamline their processes
Ideation& Validation

We gathered to determine which use cases we should prioritize and how the platform's information architecture should look. We developed several iterations, consistently getting feedback from other company designers and clients.

We tested multiple approaches for the homepage and ultimately decided to go with a dashboard that would function as a command-and-control center. We showed it to the clients we visited to ensure that it would solve their pain points and address their needs.

VTEX 02
Solution

After having made the decision to adopt the dashboard approach, it was time to refine our designs. We collaborated extensively with the design system team to create the necessary new components and interactions.

We were excited to create something new in VTEX, both in terms of product and design, incorporating new components and achieving a higher level of maturity,

Releases& Conclusion

We decided to create an Alpha and Beta version for selected clients to ensure that we could catch errors and identify low-hanging fruit sooner rather than later.

This project represents a shift in VTEX products, showing that we can be much more user-friendly and powerful by moving away from lists and towards a dashboard approach. Additionally, it serves as an example of designing in close collaboration with our users and with consistent validation.
